-genre study reggea

storyboard

this is the story board which I created I looked at the shot list. in which the first half was made by Shapali and the second Half was made By kim. i drew each shot out on paper, some of the shots weren't very good so changes them slightly to make them more interesting. then i used a fine liner and went over it to darken the lines then i started to take photos in isight but it didn't work for me so i scanned them in. i placed all of the images in imovie then cut them according to the shot list. then placed the music over it.

-genre of our own artist

this band is called scandal which has the same genre as our band called twirl.

in the opening of the song when the band is first introduces we see them in front of a bright light which only shows there silhouette. the costume of the band goes with the genre of the music. the bands starpersona is like a young school girl look with a bit more edge. this is kind of look which is well known in asia such as japan and china which is kind of linked which he visual kai look.

the prop which they have used are the music instrument

Past student's work

i would give this student a high level three because they have thought of a clear starpersona for the person. the video has good flow and good repeatability with in the video like when ever there a clap in the track every one claps. the video has good creative in put with the wires and stuff.

cinematography-
when the camera is on him its in a long to mid shot showing him and the guy behind him. the video has some good beauty shots in which we get to see the star's face. there is alot of camera movement of the dancing girls and it only focuses on the girls' bodies which come into the feminist's theory. sometimes the main actor is not in the center but in thinks that works because it show the back ground. and the other guy at the back.

mise-en-scene-
the costumes of every on are great and the makeup goes with the starpersona of the star. the props which they used are the mixing deck behind the main guy. they have thought of the location and the performing stage.

editing-
editing wise there is not much they have done. on thing i did notice that they have used quit a lot of reverse and the forward motion. which sometimes goes with the beat of music and sometimes it doesn't. to fill in the parts where we only hear the music they have used extra footage.

sound-
the movement of the actor is in sync with the music and the video amplifies the lyrics with the actor verbally speaking.

creativity

this video is a music video called her morning elegance. its creative because it uses stop motion to make the movements and tell a story. this video illustrates some of the lyrics such as when we hear the cello we see it going over her head. it also amplifies the music of the track as the animation moves with the tempo of the music and the song. i got the idea of using stop animation and creating a animation of my own i created a kind of like a stand up comedy sequence using play dough and creating various pieces of food.

there is very little camera movement in the video which conforms to the genre of the music. we see a woman sleeping on the bed and looking in to her dreams and thoughts which gives the audience a sense of voyeurism and watching some one. the camera shot add to the element of voyeurism.

the music video uses clever props such as the pillow as clouds, small pillows as steps and socks as fishes.

cross media promotion

this is a CD cover from the j pop/rock band. its a single track called remember. the bands persona is represented with casual clothing even though most of the rock band go for the convention visual kei (gothiky dressing) look but because the band does some soft music as well they went with more simpler clothing which goes with the style of there music. every one in the band os looking towards the side accept form the person in the middle and the one next to him which connotes that they are the lead in the band. the back ground is very plain its in white which tells there starpersona. almost all of them are wearing something black which shows the aspect of rock and its conventional to its genre. the typography of the CD cover is in black representing them very simple and its in the font which people use everyday and it goes with everyday costume in mise-en-scene.
this is the band's website its also reflects there starpersona which is simple but with a little rocky edge. the background of the web page is back which tells there rocky side. there are white splats in the top which is conventional to punk. the name is in white which has a contrast to the background it makes there name stand out. the header of the web page is an advert to there new singles and albums. the color scheme is very rock like.

this is a performance, narrative and its a conceptual music video. because in the beginning of the video the lead says his head hearts and then it goes back in the narrative line when they were performing. it has performance because the band are performing there music. it also has elements of conceptual because of "visions" he has when he gets knocked out. just like in there web page it was a bit like rock with the colors, in this video the lighting and the back drop was back which refers to the genre of there music which is kind of like pop rock. its conceptual because in this visions he sees weird things like every one was half fish and every one is the judge and they are doing PE. at the end of the performance we seethe same typography which we see in the CD cover.
conclusively we found out that all three medias have a clear link with the genre shown by the band's costume and the colors. plus the typography is the same in the music video and the CD cover.

stop motion

this is a video i made using istopmotion. the characters are made out of modeling clay we kept the same shot because it was hard to change the shots. the orignal idea was to only have speach bubbles butwe could see them so we added voice overs there are are our orignal voices and they have not been tempered with.

Intertextuality

this video of Ja rule and ashanty has intertextuality with the film grease and the song 'you are the one that i want'. see the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHFbhhi_XVc
the lighting in both of the videos is same but in the newer version towards the ending night falls.
the camera shots are similar to the film, the film has long shot in the beginning of the song is also a long shot. but some of the shots are not similar the characters are doing the same action the original grease but the camera angle and the shots have changed.

this shot has in intertextual reference to the movie. we the side shot of someone having a go at the hammer thing.

in the film the character of sandy wears a similar costume to ashanti in the music video which has intertextuality by the costume. not only Snady and ashanti wear the similar costume its also ja rule and danny wear the similar costume with the dark t-shirt underneath and a white jumper thing over it.
this has an intertextual reference. in this shot we see both ja rule and danny take there shirt off.

intertextuality helps audience relate to the newer text. the new video would appeal to some one who watched grease and therefore automatically become there secondary audience.

Feminist

theory
the theory of feminist refers to Sexually objectification of women. were women are seen as objects.

type
this music video is a performance video because it has the artist performing with the lyrics and the beat of the music which amplifies the lyrics and the music. its is also an conceptual video because its cross cutting between the performance and the conceptual part of the music video. i also thing that the music video has some elements of narration because first we see her in the bath tub then se gets taken away and forced to dance so ti thing is fare to say it has some narrative.

mise-en-scene
costume: lady gaga being lady gaga the costume is very reviling but its not as someone is making her do it. it uses exhibitionism which shows her body. is some shots the costume is not reviling any skin but it is showing her figure. in the opening of the video we see her and lots of other people but she stands out because all the men are wearing black all the women are wearing white and she is wearing gold. its an interesting choice because she is portraying women as innocent withe the choice of colour. and men as evil with the black and piercing and the tattoos.

props: the coffins at eh beginning of the video where the women are coming out of which starts to show the women stepping up.

lighting: in the opening of the music video there is a lens flair. then through out the video the lighting is quiet high key. towards the end of the video the lights switch off after her performance.

cinematography: often the camera person uses the rule if thirds to bring lady gaga in attention of the audience by making them focusing on her. there are lots of close up shots of her called beauty shots. which again brings the artist in focus and often the face of the artist fills the shot.

editing: when she is standing there and lots of diamonds are surrounding her its either the invisible thread or they are using an special effect in which you have lots of camera (baring in mind with the 180 rule) around the person and they shoot at the same time in which when edited and put together all the footage from the cameras we see the object at the same place but all the way around this technique was developed by the director the the film matrix and it used there a lot.

lady gaga doesn't portray women and her self as sexual objects instead she is trying to break this barrier of women considered week and helpless. but in this video she is shown as a sexual object but at the ending of the video she kills the man showing that women should stand up. the shot above shows her sitting on a thrown. this goes against the theory of intertextuality as it doesn't show her as a sexual object.

Performance

This is a music performance by VOCAOID called carameldasnen and it's a remix of its original version by a Swedish band called SUPERGOTT and its famous in Japan where the vocaliods are from. This video illustrates the music lyrics which is about dancing and joining in with the music

This video is similar to Beyonce’s single ladies because the artist wants other people to copy the performance. The target audience have made different their own version of the video by coping Beyonce’s dance. Its same with this. Both of the videos have same camera shots and movement which is long shot which makes the audience want to copy the performance of the artist. This dance called UMA UMA is famous in Japan, in which the performer positions their hand on above there head like cat’s ears and opens and closes with the tempo of the music, whilst moving there hips at the same time.

The camera shots are long shots, which makes the audience focus on the performer and their performance. The camera keeps the performer in the centre of the shot connoting that the performer is the main objective. There are a few camera movements as denoted in the video from front view to side showing what you should be doing if you are going to perform it. There is also a beauty shot of the performer (Miku) when the camera moves in to her face.

The primary target audience for this are Japanese girls. Aged 14 to 25. Interested in electric music, reads manga and watch anime. Secondary audience could be westerns. Both female and male because in anime you also have sex appeal. Aged 14 to 16-17. With the same hobbies and interests.

There are not many shots edited but just a few. Such as from a long shot to a close up. But then again the whole video is made out of animation which is kind of a technical job.

Conceptual

This video is by Sean Kingston Called Beautiful and it's a conceptual video because it switches back and forth in time. The video doesn’t really make any sense because in the beginning you have him singing and then everyone is in the cafeteria dancing., and the girl looking at him. The video has some elements of performance because they were all dancing and we had him performing the lyrics. The music video amplifies the music as the song is about beautiful girls and in the video there were lots of girls dancing.

In the aspect of performance some of the camera shots were long shots showing the audience the retro kind of dancing and showing us the location in the mise-en-scene. We denoted some beauty shots of the artist connoting that he is important. With some beauty shots they have used shallow focusing which make him stand out.

The primary target audience of this music video could be male from 15 to late 20ies interested in this kind of music girls because the song is about girls. Could in from a black ethnic background because the artist is black. The secondary audience could be white male from around the came age.

During the editing they have used some effects which gives the video an aged effect. We denote lines on the screen and colours look a bit off. There costume in mise-en scene are sort of retro adding more to the effect of aged film. The pace of the editing goes with the tempo of the music.

Narrative

This is a music narration by a Japanese band called flow and the track is called DAYS. The music is about time, ambitions and memories passing by. The music video illustrates the lyrics and tells us what the song is about but in some ways its also contradicts because the song is about memories and feelings which aren’t really shown in the video. The narration is in linier order.

This video also had some elements of performance, which amplified the lyrics as they were saying them out. The them of the video was ‘future’

There were some beauty shots of the band against the wall, as they were performing the lyrics. The video opens with the long shot of the narration and the band playing over the instrumental part of the music and closes in to the beauty shots. There are cut aways of the band and the narration. All of the time the location stays the same connoting continuousness.

The primary target audience of this music video are teenage Japanese girls who like to listen to indie rock music with the interest of watching anime because the band has also been featured in anime openings such as code geass and one piece. The secondary audience of this music video are western female and male who are interested in indie rock, pop rock and may be heavy metal because the band also play heavy metal.

In editing the only seemed to used cuts. At few points they used green screen such as the scene where the robot saves the little girl from fire. Most of the video is in black and white but some of the key objects are in color. Such as the colour of the flower, which the little girl gives to the robot indicating that the object is important. To keep with the black and white theme the characters are dressed in black and white also. In editing they used flashes between the cut aways of the band and the narration.

This music video illustrates and amplifies the music of the artist as the narration kind of shows what the lyrics of the music are about
